Gardner Museum opens.
February 15, 1925
Formerly Fenway Court, it is located at 280 Fenway. The largest private museum in the U.S. at the time, it is the former home of Isabella Stewart Gardner. The building contains one of the most extensive private collections of art in the country, but, under the terms of Gardner’s will, the art work must continue to be displayed as she had arranged it or it is all to be sold at auction, with the proceeds going to Harvard College. Morris Carter is the first director. An addition to the museum is built in 2012.*
